WASHINGTON (AP) - Despite promises by President Barack Obama, more than 70 million Americans who have health insurance through their jobs could be open to higher costs or denials of some coverage under a leading overhaul plan making its way through Congress.

That's because large employers that directly assume the cost and risk of health coverage for their workers - including Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., Caterpillar Inc. and Xerox - wouldn't be subject to the same rules and restrictions that would be imposed on health insurers in the measure approved this month by the Senate Finance Committee.

Large companies that offer their workers such coverage are lobbying hard to keep the status quo and be shielded from costly new regulations and requirements in the final health measure currently being negotiated behind closed doors by Obama's top aides and leading Democrats.

"I want to make very clear that we cannot promise the American people that the insurance reforms they have been hearing so much about will benefit everyone, when the reality is that this bill leaves out" up to 55 percent, or 73 million people covered by such arrangements, said Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W. Va., when the Finance panel met recently to debate the measure. He tried unsuccessfully to change the legislation to require those plans to obey all rules applying to insurers.

What the firms want is to be able to keep extending health insurance to their workers free of many insurance regulations, such as those governing what services must be covered by a policy and when a person can be denied coverage.

That means that despite Obama's pledges that people will no longer be subject to the most egregious aspects of today's health care system - being denied insurance because of a health condition, shouldering crippling out-of-pocket costs, or facing limits or high costs for basic services and treatments - a wide swath of workers wouldn't enjoy the same guarantees.

Several big business groups have banded together as the National Coalition on Benefits to preserve their special status, originally granted in the early 1970s for employers that take on the risks and costs associated with insuring their own workers. They've been bringing executives from companies large and small to Capitol Hill for meetings with lawmakers to drive home their slogan: "Don't erode what works to fix what's broken."

The companies say they need flexibility to continue covering workers, and provisions included in other drafts of the health overhaul that would eventually subject them to some of the same rules as insurance companies - like requiring them to offer specific benefits - would crush their ability to do so.

NO health insurance does not mean NO healthcare.

Perhaps Obama and the Democrats should concentrate on unemployment.
At 10%, that's a lot of people without insurance.

I think he has destroyed the economy on purpose, so that he can get more people to push for a government take over of health care.

The more unemployed there are, the more that will want free government healthcare.

I, on the other hand, believe that everyone should provide for themselves.

BTW, NO health insurance does not mean NO healthcare.

If you were without insurance, then why are you still living?

I too went for a period of time without insurance, I'm still here.

For those that don't we have free Health Care at hospitals in this country.

As conservatives face off against their own natural party, the GOP, in NY-23, Florida, and elsewhere, we should remember Ronald Reagan's famous speech, "A Time To Choose."

"Not too long ago, two friends of mine were talking to a Cuban refugee, a businessman who had escaped from Castro, and in the midst of his story one of my friends turned to the other and said, "We don't know how lucky we are." And the Cuban stopped and said, "How lucky you are? I had someplace to escape to." And in that sentence he told us the entire story. If we lose freedom here, there's no place to escape to. This is the last stand on earth.

And this idea that government is beholden to the people, that it has no other source of power except the sovereign people, is still the newest and the most unique idea in all the long history of man's relation to man.
This is the issue of this election: Whether we believe in our capacity for self-government or whether we abandon the American revolution and confess that a little intellectual elite in a far-distant capitol can plan our lives for us better than we can plan them ourselves. (CNSNews.com)– Regardless of what the U.S. Congress decides about health care reform, a growing number of states are standing up for individuals' freedom of choice when it comes to purchasing – or not purchasing – health insurance.
 
Several Kansas Republicans have introduced a state constitutional amendment that would protect the right of Kansas residents to make their own health care choices. That makes Kansas the 19th state where legislators have introduced, or will introduce, such legislation.
 
The proposed Kansas amendment preserves the right of individuals to pay directly for medical care -- something that is not allowed in single-payer countries such as Canada. It also prohibits any individual from being penalized for not purchasing government-defined insurance.
 
Under the amendment, any state attempt to require an individual to purchase health insurance--or forbid an individual from purchasing services outside of the government-established health care system--would be rendered unconstitutional.
 
The legislation is modeled after a bill written by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a membership association of state lawmakers.
 
"Federal health care reform efforts may include a requirement that individuals purchase health insurance, and a so-called 'public option' which will result in less choices for consumers and new government mandates," said Iowa State Rep. Linda Upmeyer, who chairs ALEC's Health and Human Services Task Force.
 
"Americans don't need more government mandates, we need real consumer choice. ALEC's Freedom of Choice in Health Care Act is designed to protect individual rights and our freedom to purchase health insurance of our choice, or not," she added.
 
Kansas now joins legislators in seven states (Alaska, Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, New Hampshire and Utah) that have publicly announced their intention to file legislation to protect their citizens from any government health-care mandates.
 
Another 11 states have already filed or pre-filed similar legislation (Arizona, Florida, Indiana, Minnesota, North Dakota, New Mexico, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Wyoming). Arizona's measure, which passed the legislature in June, will be put before voters on the 2010 ballot.

Democrats in the U.S. Congress are now finalizing legislation that will make major changes to the nation's health care system, and they are doing so without Republican input.
 
Republicans say they're all for health-care reform, as long as it's the result of true bipartisanship. Republicans say their ideas – including medical liability reform,  tax credits to help individuals buy private insurance, and allowing families and businesses buy insurance across state lines – are a better approach than adding a huge new government-sponsored insurance plan into the mix.

"Where's the Outrage?"

"Where's the Outrage?"  Republicans want to know why The Community Organizer gets a pass on some of the very actions that would have brought the media down on Bush like a hammer.  Duhhhhhh.  The media?

A four-hour stop in New Orleans, on his way to a $3 million fundraiser.

Snubbing the Dalai Lama.

Signing off on a secret deal with drug makers.

Freezing out a TV network.

Doing more fundraisers than the last president. More golf, too.

President Barack Obama has done all of those things — and more.

What's remarkable is what hasn't happened. These episodes haven't become metaphors for Obama's personal and political character — or consuming controversies that sidetracked the rest of his agenda.

It's a sign that the media's echo chamber can be a funny thing, prone to the vagaries of news judgment, and an illustration that, in politics, context is everything.

Conservatives look on with a mix of indignation and amazement and ask: Imagine the fuss if George W. Bush had done these things?

And quickly add, with a hint of jealousy: How does Obama get away with it?

"We have a joke about it. We're going to start a website: IfBushHadDoneThat.com," former Bush counselor Ed Gillespie said. "The watchdogs are curled up around his feet, sleeping soundly. ... There are countless examples: some silly, some serious."

Indeed, Bush got grief for secret meetings with the oil industry, politicizing the White House and spending too much time on his beloved bike. But it's not just Republicans who notice. Media observers note that the president often gets kid-glove treatment from the press, fellow Democrats and, particularly, interest groups on the left — Bush's loudest critics, Obama's biggest backers.

  • For the last ten years, our government spending has skyrocketed thanks to George Bush.
  • Congress votes to increase the debt ceiling.
  • Barack Obama gets into office and spends more in his first few months than all other presidents combined, even more than Bush
  • Congress needs to increase the debt ceiling, but Democrats don't want to get blamed.
  • Democrats attach the vote on the increase to a Defense spending bill to fund the troops in Afghanistan (a hot issue at the moment).
  • The Democrats try to downplay the issue of increase so as to not spark public outrage.
  • The Republicans say they don't want to vote for the bill because of the increase.
  • The Democrats say that the Republicans don't want to support the troops.
  • The Republicans end up voting for the bill anyway.
  • Election time rolls around, and Democrats use the vote against Republicans saying that they voted to increase the debt limit to a whopping $13 trillion (neglecting to mention the fact that the increase was attached to a bill to fund the troops because the Democrats manipulated it that way).

Physicists Calculate Exact Number of Alternate Universes

There are 10^10^16 of them (but #1,000,443,163,313,125,343,132 is the evil one)

For some time, physicists have theorized about the existence of alternate universes. In fact, some models of physics require multiple universes, to explain some rarely observed phenomena. But, other than obvious ones like The Man In The High Castle Universe where the Nazis won WWII, the Earth-295 Age of Apocalypse Universe, and the Terran Empire "Mirror Mirror" Universe, just how many alternate universes are there? Well, some Stanford University physicists have answered that question, and the magic number is: 10^10^16 other realities.

The physicists, Andrei Linde and Vitaly Vanchurin, calculated the number by first going all the way back to the Big Bang. Linde and Vanchurin posit that the stellar organization and physics of our universe resulted from small perturbations in the otherwise uniform mass of matter and energy that existed milliseconds after the Big Bang. So, the number of possible variations of those perturbations represents the upper limit of possible alternate universes, or about 10^10^10^7 possible alternate universes.

However, because of the physical limits of the human brain, no individual could perceive more than 10^10^16 realities different from our own. And since the perspective of the viewer factors into the calculations (like time dilation in relativity), that's the number of possible alternate universes.

Of course, that's the total number of POSSIBLE alternate universes. The number of ACTUAL alternative universes actually depends on depends on how many boxes the Professor made.

Palin: Good Intentions Aren't Enough with Health Care Reform

Now that the Senate Finance Committee has approved its health care bill, it's a good time to step back and take a look at the long term consequences should its provisions be enacted into law.

...Those driving this plan no doubt have good intentions, but good intentions aren't enough. There were good intentions behind the drive to increase home ownership for lower-income Americans, but forcing financial institutions to give loans to people who couldn't afford them had terrible unintended consequences. We all felt those consequences during the financial collapse last year. Unintended consequences always result from top-down big government plans like the current health care proposals, and we can't afford to ignore that fact again.

...The plan will also impose heavy taxes on insurers, pharmaceutical companies, medical device companies, and clinical labs. [3] The result of all of these taxes is clear. As Douglas Holtz-Eakin noted in the Wall Street Journal, these new taxes "will be passed on to consumers by either directly raising insurance premiums, or by fueling higher health-care costs that inevitably lead to higher premiums."
[4] Unfortunately, it will lead to lower wages too, as employees will have to sacrifice a greater percentage of their paychecks to cover these higher premiums. [5] In other words, if the Democrats succeed in overhauling health care, we'll all bear the costs. The Senate Finance bill is effectively a middle class tax increase, and as Holtz-Eakin points out, according to the Joint Committee on Taxation those making less than $200,000 will be hit hardest. [6]

...All of this certainly gives the appearance of politics-as-usual in Washington with no change in sight. 
Americans want health care reform because we want affordable health care. We don't need subsidies or a public option. We don't need a nationalized health care industry. We need to reduce health care costs. But the Senate Finance plan will dramatically increase those costs, all the while ignoring common sense cost-saving measures like tort reform. Though a Congressional Budget Office report confirmed that reforming medical malpractice and liability laws could save as much as $54 billion over the next ten years, tort reform is nowhere to be found in the Senate Finance bill.

Here's a novel idea. Instead of working contrary to the free market, let's embrace the free market. Instead of going to war with certain private sector companies, let's embrace real private-sector competition and allow consumers to purchase plans across state lines. Instead of taxing the so-called "Cadillac" plans that people get through their employers, let's give individuals who purchase their own health care the same tax benefits we currently give employer-provided health care recipients. Instead of crippling Medicare, let's reform it by providing recipients with vouchers so that they can purchase their own coverage.

Now is the time to make your voices heard before it's too late. If we don't fight for the market-oriented, patient-centered, and result-driven reform plan that we deserve, we'll be left with the disastrous unintended consequences of the plans currently being cooked up in Washington.

Not Evil Just Wrong

Who Else Will Challenge Gore's 'Truth'?

Last week at the Society of Environmental Journalists conference in Wisconsin, former Vice President Al Gore took questions from journalists about global warming for the first time in years. I attended to ask him about factual errors in his movie, "An Inconvenient Truth."

You wouldn't know it from the sparse media coverage, but the British High Court found so many errors in Gore's movie in 2007 that British schools no longer can show the film without the equivalent of a health warning.

I asked Gore if he intends to correct the record. He dodged the question, and the so-called reporters defended his right to be evasive by shutting off my mic.

The encounter was disappointing but not surprising. I served years of hard time as a liberal journalist in Europe and learned that covering the environmental beat meant toeing the line of extremism — no inconvenient questions allowed.

But it is now time for journalists, and the consumers and businesses that will pay the ultimate price, to start questioning the conventional wisdom about global warming and exposing its true cost. If alarmists like Al Gore get their way, millions of American families will watch as their dreams of a prosperous and pleasant future disappear.

The evidence of environmentalism run amok abounds in Europe. Spain believed the spin that environmental regulation can create "green jobs" and boost the economy. Now the country has 18% unemployment. Britain could suffer blackouts because of policies that require the country to replace coal with fuels like solar and wind power that aren't readily available or reliable.

Unfortunately for Americans, many of the lawmakers who represent them in Congress seem unwilling to learn from Europe's mistakes.

The Senate is now considering a bill that Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., co-authored to create a European-style "cap and trade" system for carbon dioxide emissions, and he just won theendorsement of a key swing senator. International pressure on the United States to adopt such legislation also will increase in December at climate talks in Copenhagen.

That's bad news for taxpayers. The Obama administration reluctantly admitted last month that cap-and-trade would cost the average American family $1,761 a year.

That is a rosy prediction. A Heritage Foundation analysis pegs the cost at an average of $2,979 a year and as much as $4,600 a year by 2035. Jobs will disappear, energy prices will skyrocket, and the American Dream will become an unattainable fantasy for many.

Wealthy environmental elites like Ed Begley Jr., who is featured in our documentary "Not Evil Just Wrong," think that is just fine. They love to tell everyone how "happy" people are in the Third World, where poverty, disease and premature deaths are common. But if they really loved it, they would move themselves and their families to Fiji and burn all of their passports.

Instead, environmentalists live comfortably, flying around the world telling other people they should forsake air travel and drive cars that cost as much as many people pay for a place to live. All the while, the environmentalists try to scare people with stories about dying polar bears and lemurs.

Their hysteria knows no bounds. The British government is now spending nearly $10 million to air ads that feature an animated puppy drowning, a rabbit crying and a carbon monster spewing soot from the sky.

The ad is so laughable that even the journal Nature mocked it. But Britain wouldn't be spending that kind of money unless it expected a return on the investment in the form of new converts to the false doctrine of global warming.

That's why it's so important for journalists who inform the public to ask tough questions, both about the science behind global warming and the financial impact on consumers and businesses.

Americans had better hope their country's journalists start grilling Gore and his colleagues. Otherwise, more people will be misled, and the country will be feeling Europe's green-induced economic pains for years.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner's cave on missile defense made us look weak so he announced that the scrapped missile defense didn't matter because we would go with a mobile missile defense system; which was a better solution anyway.

A Perfect Tsunami: U.S. Health care reform and a conservative doc in American Samoa

On 9/29/09, an 8.3 earthquake and massive tsunami devastated much of the U.S. territory of American Samoa.  Its fragile health care infrastructure crumbled in the wake of the natural disasters, leaving the 77-square-mile island's residents and visitors with skeleton services.
The only hospital in the region, the LBJ Tropical Medical Center, was overwhelmed with injured patients who had to be evacuated twice in the ensuing days.

I came to American Samoa last week in response to FEMA's call and the LBJ hospital CEO's request.  As a general and trauma surgeon, I believed I could serve the population during a difficult time.

I owe American Samoa.

This tiny U.S. territory's residents enlist in the U.S. Armed Forces at a per capita rate higher than any state in the union.  Their patriotism and commitment to defending our country is widely known in the U.S. military but largely unheard of elsewhere.

And so I came to pay a debt of gratitude in the aftermath of a disaster that leveled villages and filled the only morgue on the island far beyond its capacity.  One of FEMA's first shipments was a set of temporary cold storage units for "overflow" bodies.

Between handling emergency cases (Dengue Fever!), seeing patients in the Intensive Care Unit and helping the reopened surgical clinic catch up, I have followed the progress of Congress as it prepares to debate the most radical remaking of the U.S. health care system since its inception.

On partisan lines with the addition of Senator Olympia Snowe (R-ME), the Senate subcommittee headed by Senator Max Baucus passed its version of the bill.  It is headed now to the Senate floor for debate, probably during the week of October 26th.

I do not quarrel with those who suggest that our system of funding and delivering care could be better.  Improving affordability and access while preserving patient choice and increasing safety are terrific goals that merit serious consideration and good policymaking.

The Baucus health care bill meets none of these goals.

Instead, it drives up the cost of coverage for average families and small business owners. 

Not a single doctor or nurse is added to address the shortage experienced in underserved communities across the country. 

Patient autonomy is threatened, with the bill's creation of a brand new bureaucracy to limit treatment options -- headed by a political appointee/Czar ironically named "The Commissioner on Healthcare Choices."

Patient safety is entirely ignored in the Senate bill, without a single sentence to reform a medical malpractice system that rewards excessive and unnecessary testing without benefitting those truly injured.

It is a painful disappointment to me to realize that an opportunity to serve American patients has been discarded by those elected to serve.  Instead, we are presented with over 1,000 pages of a reward for political cronies and those who believe that problems in the U.S. health care system stem from a lack of government intrusion into private medical decisions.

$10 billion for labor union bailouts?  It's in there.  New taxes for middle class families the President had promised to spare?  It's in there.  Financially crushing new obligations for small business owners already struggling in a weak economy?  That's also in Senator Baucus's new health care tonic.

So, considering what's being debated on the mainland, I feel lucky and blessed to be serving on this American outpost.

American Samoa has been hit -- and hit hard -- by a series of disasters that challenge the resilience of the Americans who reside on this beautiful but vulnerable island.

But American Samoa's tsunami was not of its own making.  I cannot say the same of the health care reform bill generated by the United States Senate.
